Yesterday I created an account for my son on iTunes. This was so I could give him an allowance to download his own songs. He purchased two songs and they downloaded fine to his iPod. The iPod showed the songs and artwork however the songs would not play. The iPod would just skip over them. He has an iPod video 30GB and my laptop is a Toshiba running Windows XP and iTunes 6.0.4.
I tried loading them onto my iPod nano with the same result.
I then searched the web and discovered many people were having the problem, but it seemed like nobody had found the solution.
I tried doing the 5 R's APPLE recommended to no avail. It was a very frustrating day.
Around midnight, I found an obscure statement on the Apple forum recommending deleting a file under the "All Users" setting. Here is the link and text:
"If that doesn't work, try this...
1) Delete the SC Info.sidb file as documented in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386.
2) If the issue persists, again try recrating the iTunes Music Library as described in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313
If this works, please post back for some more info and what to do with the files you copied.

I think the key was deleting the SC Info.sidb file. This is something Apple needs to acknowledge and post. It could have saved me several hours.

George Lucas Sighting
So I'm in Las Vegas for the annual CTIA show. We stayed at the Paris hotel, one of my favorites because it's not overwhelming and is clean and Disneyesque in its capture of stereotypical France.
Anyway, there was apparently a wine show going on at the hotel for the first couple of days. I happened across several open suites hosting various tastings. I didn't have the guts to walk in and try some but that isn't the point.
I was at the LV convention center attending the show when my friend Andy called from the hotel. Excited, he couldn't wait to tell me that he rode an elevator with George Lucas. The funny thing is that he is the most outgoing person I know but he was speechless around Lucas. We come from the Star Wars generation (I was ten when the movie premiered) so Lucas' work had a profound, major impact on our lives.
Because he knew nobody would believe him, for the rest of the night he kept pointing out men who resembled (or didn't) Lucas and saying "There he is!!!" Everybody got a big kick out of it.
The really funny thing happened the next morning. We were standing in line for a restaurant and chatting about seeing George Lucas when all of a sudden Andy exclaimed "There he is!" I turned to look where he was pointing and sure enough, there was the legend himself walking along the faux-cobblestone street chatting with an older, taller man. I was struck by how short GL was but of course camera angles can conceal much. He's also much thinner than he appears on TV but its true cameras add pounds to everyone.

cat that is not very smart. He eats things that he finds on the floor. One day he ate a bunch of rubber bands that he found on a dresser.
He stopped eating his food and hid in a corner. Obviously feeling very sick.
We took him to the vet who x-rayed him and found that his intestines were completely blocked. The only way to save him was for them to operate on his stomach and remove the blockages.
$800 later this is the result.

iPOD not recognized
So I get the new David Gilmour CD at tower records and rip it with iTunes. Then I got real busy (I was on the road in Philly, then to DC and Charlotte) and didn't sync up my Nano right away. Well, when I finally plugged it in I found out the PC didn't "see" it. In other words, it didn't launch iTunes nor was I able to find it as a media storage device.
As usual, I searched Google using phrases like "iPOD not recognized" and found hundreds of matching pages. Most of them had solutions involving re-installing ipod updater, itunes, and disabling/enabling high-speed USB ports. The one solution that actually worked can be found here: http://www.mcse.ms/archive61-2005-12-2044620.html
Not only did this fix the problem quickly and simply, but I learned how to do a soft-reset of a Nano. Thanks Ben!

Audi A6 False Anti-lock brake activation
I had a problem with my 2000 Audi A6 2.7T Quattro. When I came to a slow stop, like to a stoplight or stop sign, as the car's speed dropped below 5 miles per hour, the anti-lock brakes came on at the front wheels. The car would lurch slightly from the front end as the brakes were modulated at the wheel. There was also the typical ABS grinding noise as the pump motor worked. This was a frustrating problem.
My online research revealed a condition called "False ABS activation at low speeds." Though this article pertains to Chevy, Ford, and GM 4x4's, this sounded like my problem.

The gist of the article is that corrosion around the wheel speed sensors can interfere with an accurate reading of the wheel's speed. This, is turn, can trick the ABS computer into thinking one of the wheels is slipping; it thinks the front wheels are turning at different rates. The ABS module is probably not faulty; its doing its job properly.
The wheel speed sensors are basically electro-magnets which are mounted close to a notched metal ring near the wheel bearings. The notches in the ring cause the electrical current passing through the sensor to vary proportional to the speed of the wheel (in accordance with the Hall effect.)
Lacking an oscilloscope, I took the experimental approach. I pulled off a front wheel to see how hard the sensor is to reach. Luckily, the wheel sensor is located on the forward side of the rear of the wheel spindle. It has a 90 degree elbow electrical connector attached to it. I looked all around for a nut or something holding it in but found none. Trying to wiggle it, I discovered the sensor is "pressed" in or friction-fit. Wiggling it some more, I found out I could remove it by pulling and wiggling gently. It popped out and I couldn't wait to visually inspect it for corrosion.
Sure enough, the sides of the sensor body were coated with a light layer of orange. The tip of the sensor was hairy with what appeared to be corrosion as well as some metal flakes. I'm not sure what the flakes were from but I've read that residue from a brake job (turning and grinding the rotors specifically) can sometimes fall into the bearing area. I'm not sure about that but there were a few flakes on the sensor tip.
I cleaned the sensor barrel and copper sleeve with some brasso, blew out the hole with some compressed air, and re-inserted the sensor. Much to my delight, a quick test drive showed that the condition was gone. Now I can take passengers around without scaring them that my brakes are on the fritz.
Now that I know what I'm doing, I could do that repair without pulling a wheel in a matter of minutes.

Who should play Lance Armstrong in the biopic?
There is a rumor, reinforced by Lance himself, that Matt Damon will play him in a biopic.

I don't think Matt is the right choice for the role. Not only because of his physique, but because he doesn't capture the essence of Lance. Lance is lean, scrappy, cocky.
Someone else has suggested Ioan Gruffud from the Fantastic Four (Reed Richards.) I've seen photos of him where he looks a lot like Lance. I don't know if he has the personality though.
Also, on the new Battlestar Galactica series the guy that plays Apollo looks like Lance, but is too bulky.

I travel frequently for work and currently use my laptop on T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. Thus, I have to find Starbucks coffee shops all over the place. Even though you think you see them everywhere, when you are in a strange city you can't seem to find one when you need one.

Wireless Broadband?
I've been thinking about canceling my Verizon PDA data plan that I use on my Samsung i600 smartphone. The reason is that the 1X data is only useful for emails and not much else. Since I travel with a laptop 100% of the time, it would make more sense to get an EV-DO card and the broadband data service ($59.99 per month.) I've heard the Kyocera KPC-650 card has the best reliability and throughput...this from a Verizon Wireless System Performance Engineer (aka Test Man.)
Believe it or not, I actually still call Verizon Wireless customer service every now and then. I've found on my monthly calls to them several comforting certainties:
1. I'll be put on hold a minimum of 5 minutes after navigating their unclear voice prompts and end up hitting 0 anyway.
2. The rep won't have a clue about wireless data. In fact, I explained the difference between EV-DO and 1XRTT just the other day to someone who thanked me with an "Oh" of dismissal.
3. There will be a new rate plan they'll be happy to sign me up for, in exchange for a 2 year contract extension.
The only thing worse than their phone support is their store support as this guy recently found.

Dinner on the beach
We had a wonderful dinner on the beach last night at our hotel restaurant. The meal included five courses and was served by our own private waitress (Virginia, from Jamaica.) The food and sunset were so awesome we finished two bottles of wine then went walking along the beach, hoping to see some sea turtles hatch (but no luck.)

Hurricane Emily
This is coming to you from Eagle Beach in Aruba. Hurricane Emily passed this way early this morning. Around 7 am, there were some strong winds and pouring rain but nothing too extreme. It is now 2:50 in the afternoon and I'm sitting under a palm hut on the beach. The sun is out and I can't take any more of it today.
The only effects from the storm is the surf. The waves have been about 5-6 ft high today and they've been slamming right into the shore. They're strong enough to knock me off my feet. In fact, I tried body surfing one and it ground me into the sand chest-first. It scraped a hole about 5 inches across in my sunburned skin, kind of like road-rash. I tried to stay in but the salt water was too irritating. Now I know about 1/100th of the pain a burn victim must feel.

Hi Tech
What's amazing is that I'm sitting on the beach in Aruba, watching the Tour De France live on my PC via a Wi-Fi connection. Lance is still the overall leader although Vinokourov had a massive ride today. He attacked at 28km and won the stage! He was ahead by over 3 minutes going over the Col Du Galibier. I guess he was pretty upset about getting spanked yesterday.
The only problem I'm having is that my laptop battery is about to die. Go figure.

When trying to synchronize my smartphone (Samsung i600) with my MSOutlook through Verizon Wireless's Wireless Sync, the calendar on the phone was deleted. Apparently, one needs to open the calendar feature at least once before performing a wireless sync.

Here is yet another announcement about a BWA system using pre-WiMax type gear. No word on the frequency range but one has to suspect that Bell is going to use some of the frequencies they just won in the auction this past February.

Star Wars III Spoof
This has got to be one of the most impressive "home movies" I've ever seen. The green screen effects are top-notch. The costumes and puppets are extremely detailed. Even the hammy acting is better than average. The story follows the lead of the R.O.T.S. plot leaked thus far but these moviemakers have lampooned it to great effect. Several of the gags are hilarious, if somewhat basic (the very pregnant Padme.) I love this movie!

T-Mobile Report on the Hilton Sidekick Hacking
SECURITY ALERT
Last week hackers broke into the T-mobile server and stole personal information from esteemed actress Paris Hiltons’ account-- including celebrity phone lists, chat transcripts and personal notes. "T-Mobile's computer forensics and security team is actively investigating to determine how Ms. Hilton's information was obtained. This includes the possibility that someone had access to one of Ms. Hilton's devices and/or knew her account password," Zidar said, cleverly casting all blame on the actress.
As it turns, her password was “paris”. Here’s a small sample of what leaked out:

As I’ve just clearly illustrated, it is infact very easy to gain unlawful access to private information. When asked about this gaping security loophole, T-mobile officials in the Beltsville office pointed out a multi-step approach, entitled “The Big 5”.
Last week hackers broke into the T-mobile server and stole personal information from esteemed actress Paris Hiltons’ account-- including celebrity phone lists, chat transcripts and personal notes. "T-Mobile's computer forensics and security team is actively investigating to determine how Ms. Hilton's information was obtained. This includes the possibility that someone had access to one of Ms. Hilton's devices and/or knew her account password," Zidar said, cleverly casting all blame on the actress.
As it turns, her password was “paris”. Here’s a small sample of what leaked out:

Paris: I hate it
Nichole yeah, me too
Paris: it only cost me 5 thousand,
no more dolce for me

Police have apprehended a suspect and detained him for questioning. Law officials are keeping his identity confidential, being that the suspect is only 5 years old. When asked to change her password to something more difficult to decipher, Paris replied, “I’ll change it to ‘hilton’”, adding, “but this time I’ll use all capital letters.” “Good thinking,” answered her lifetime bestfriend.
With a question of security now on everyone’s mind, at least if you read the first part of this sentence, I decided to find out how easily our personal accounts could be accessed and spent the better part of last Saturday evening using my “computer hacking skills” to break into Jon Smalls directory. Linksys WRT54G Router Setup Adventures
I set up a Linksys wireless router over the weekend. Everything I had read led me to believe the installation would be a breeze and take about 5 minutes. That was not exactly the case.
I had just set up DSL-Lite on a 1999 Dell P3. The PC has 128 M of RAM and a 6 GB hard drive. The DSL modem is a Westell (the little white one.) I ran the installation wizard. I was surprised at how slow it was between steps. It seemed to almost crawl and hang-up between phases (such as verifying the internet connection, etc.) Finally, it got to the point where I had to disconnect the modem and connect the router. It was at that point that it failed.
I stepped through the menus on the wizard. First it asked for the host and domain name. Then it asked for the type of service (802.11b, g, or mixed), the SSID, and some other stuff. Then it asked if I wanted to enable security. Finally it summarized the settings and asked if I wanted to confirm (yes/no) or exit.
The first thing that was wrong was the service type. Even though I selected "Mixed" the confirmation screen was showing that I selected "B-only." I stepped back a couple screens and verified I had the right selection on the pull-down menu (I did.) I went forward to the conf. screen and it still said "B-only." I chose "Yes" to confirm my settings.
The software appeared to go into a hang-state and then told me several minutes later that the router could not be found. It asked if I wanted to power off the modem and try again (I did.) The same thing happened. I tried the wizard several more times with the same results.
I did find a work-around to the services selection. It turns out that if you choose "B-only" the software will set the router to "Mixed" mode. Funny huh?
I gave up on this for a couple of days while busy doing some other work. Finally Sunday morning I was determined not to let a little thing like a router get the better of me. I was getting an RF signal and it was recognizing the ports and internet so I was convinced it was an IP setting conflict.
I searched on the internet for advice and finally found an obscure note on a sub-page of the linksys customer support site. It said to "check the IP address in the router and make sure it is not 198.162.1.1." Now this is frustrating for a couple of reasons. First, the setup wizard sets the IP address to 198.162.1.1. Second, the wizard never mentions that this is not right.
The obscure page said to manually (through the internet settings page) set the IP address of the router to 198.162.2.1. I made the change from 1 to 2 and guess what? The internet sprang to life on my screen.
My frustration is that the setup wizard did not correct this problem. Second that it was so hard to find what is really a pretty simple answer.

Pink Rubber Bands
I guess I was naive to think people would not take this whole rubber wristband thing, which was originally a very noble effort, and turn it into a fashion enterprise Pink Susan Komen Wristbands
When Nike and Lance first developed the concept I was intrigued. I tried to order some of the first ones and they were on back order. When I finally received my shipment in August I wore mine with pride. I gave out several and told everyone where they could get their own and what the purpose of the foundation was.
I was first disgusted when I went into a shopping mall around Christmas time and saw a cart vendor hocking them for about $5 each. Next a Carolina Panthers player started selling poor-quality latex bands. Then I started seeing other stores (Hallmark, 7-eleven, etc.) hocking their own version of the bands for their own charities.
I think it has cheapened the meaning of Lance's crusade. Livestrong was unique and it was a unique way to honor Lance, his incredible achievements, and the incredible work his foundation does. The uniqueness was what made it so special.
I have no problem with other charities raising funds but why did they have to steal the concept of the rubber bands? I guess it is the American way isn't it?

The Iraq elections
There are 150,000 US and coalition troops in a country of 25 million. That is a ratio of .006 soldiers per citizen. Therefore most of the citizens are probably already on our side. The problem is that there is a minority of extremists, that have a lot of ordinance, that are opposed to our presence. Actually, their actions demonstrate that what they are really against is freedom.
That is why they've stepped up their attacks in anticipation of the election. They are terrified about the Iraqi people learning what it is like to vote, to actually have a voice in their country.
It is really amazing to think about it. In less than three years, two countries in the Middle East have gone from dictatorships to having free elections. No, the elections have a lot of details to work out. But the mere fact that there are elections at all is just amazing.
These people are where America was during the end of the 18th century! Back then only men who owned property could vote. Now we have a democracy that is a model for the future of our species!
It is exciting to think about what the future holds for the Middle East. I look forward to witnessing the changes during my lifetime and envious about not being around to see what it will be like a hundred years from now!

My first juice experiment. Start with all organic vegetables and fruits.
2 large carrots

1 large granny smith apple
4 pcs spinach
3 radishes
It tasted pretty good. I started with 1/2 of the apple but when I added the rest it was much more pleasant tasting. Not sure I could taste any of the ginger.

There seems to be trouble brewing between the backers of IEEE 802.16 and a new working group for 802.22. (rethink)
The conflict centers around access to the juicy frequencies in the sub-1 GHz range (spectrum nirvana.) The 802.16 group thinks that with its development of the standard into a true mobility standard, it would be able to serve the rural markets cost-effectively. The 802.22 group thinks it should develop a separate case purely for serving those rural markets. It all boils down to competition between the standards.

Yahoo! News - Judge finds fault in CMS
The election of 11/2/04 in Mecklenburg county resulted in democrats gaining a majority of the county commission by claiming the 3 open "at-large" seats. The republican candidates all ran on platforms of greater accountability from the school board. The democrats seemed to unanimously support increased funding for the school system. Haven't posted any updates in awhile. It's hard to believe it but my 20 year HS reunion is upcoming. I am not ready for it! In 1984, I promised that I would drive a shiny red Ferrari to it and I still don't know anyone that can loan me one!
